What Selective Pallet Rack Is

In 30 Seconds

Selective pallet rack is single-deep racking served directly from the aisle. Each pallet sits in its own position, reachable without disturbing the rest, which is why it's the default in roughly three-quarters of the buildings we walk into.

Upright frames carry the vertical load to the slab; load beams span between them and carry the pallets. Selectivity is the product. A drive-in lane holds more pallets in the same footprint, but reaching the fifth means moving four others, a sequencing cost that shows up daily for operations picking across many SKUs.

  • What it is. Single-deep pallet rack where every pallet position is reachable directly from the aisle, without moving another pallet first.
  • What you are buying. Access. Any SKU, any time, with no sequencing and no double handling.
  • What you give up. Density. Selective stores fewer pallets per square foot than any other rack type.
  • Where it fits. Operations with many SKUs and low pallet counts per SKU, which describes most distribution and most manufacturing.

Where Selective Rack Goes In

Where It Fits Best

  • High-SKU distribution

Many part numbers, a few pallets each. The pattern selective is built for.

  • Order picking from the floor level

Pick from the bottom position, replenish from above, with reserve storage overhead.

  • Manufacturing raw material and WIP

Mixed inventory that turns unevenly and cannot be sequenced in advance.

  • Buildings that change tenants

Selective reconfigures. Beam levels move to a new pallet height in an afternoon, which matters in speculative space.

  • Cold storage anterooms and staging

Where access beats cube and the pallet mix is unpredictable.

  • Anywhere the SKU count is still growing

Density systems lock in assumptions about your inventory profile. Selective does not.

Selective, Push Back, or Drive-In?

The Real Tradeoff

Selectivity is what you are buying, and density is what you are giving up. The right system is decided by how many pallets you hold per SKU, not by how much floor you have.

The practical test. Count your pallets per SKU. Below about four, selective almost always wins on total operating cost even though it stores less. Above ten on a stable SKU, a density system starts paying for itself. Between those numbers it is a real analysis, and it is worth doing properly before the steel is ordered.

Laid Out and Installed in Atlanta, GA

Engineered & Permitted

We lay out racking in AutoCAD against your fork trucks, aisle widths, and pallet dimensions, not a catalog default. Turning radius, mast height, and load overhang decide the aisle, and the aisle decides how many positions fit.

Permitting is part of the scope. Many Georgia jurisdictions require a permit for rack above a threshold height, and requirements vary by county. We identify what applies at your address during the proposal and handle the permit and the inspection.

Our crews install it. Plumb, square, properly anchored, and correctly torqued is the difference between a system that lasts twenty years and one that gets red-tagged.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

How much does selective pallet rack cost?

Cost per pallet position is driven by beam length, capacity, upright height, decking and protection accessories. Selective is the lowest cost per bay and the highest cost per stored pallet, because it stores fewer of them. We quote from a layout rather than a bay count.

Do I need a permit for pallet racking in Georgia?

Often, above a threshold height that varies by jurisdiction. Fulton, Cobb and Gwinnett do not treat it identically. We confirm what applies at your address during the proposal and handle the permit and the inspection.

Can you reconfigure rack we already own?

Yes, and it is a large share of what we do in metro Atlanta. We verify the existing components, capacities and condition first, because mixing manufacturers or reusing damaged uprights is how a reconfiguration becomes a failure.

What capacity do I need?

Capacity is rated per beam pair and per frame, and it depends on beam length and the number of levels. The number that matters is the heaviest pallet you will actually store, not the average. Size to the heaviest realistic load.
