What a Gantry Crane Is
In 30 seconds
A gantry crane is an overhead lifting structure supported by its own legs rather than by your building. A beam spans between two leg assemblies, a trolley and hoist travel the beam, and the whole thing rolls on casters or floor rails.
Nothing attaches to the building. No runway, no roof loading, no column reinforcement, no structural review. For a lot of buyers that single fact is the entire reason they're looking at a gantry, their roof was never designed for a crane and the landlord isn't interested in a conversation about it.
The trade-off is coverage. A gantry lifts where you roll it. A jib crane or a bridge crane covers a defined area continuously.
Aluminum or Steel
Specifications
Aluminum gantry cranes are light enough for one or two people to reposition, which is what makes them genuinely portable. They suit maintenance lifts, lighter loads, and situations where the crane moves between areas regularly.
Steel gantry cranes carry more, take more abuse, and stay put longer. They suit fixed stations, outdoor yards, and heavier repeated lifts.
Adjustable height and span are available on both. If the crane has to clear a doorway in one place and reach over a machine in another, specify adjustable up front.

Design build scope
Gantries are one of the few things on this site that don't strictly need us to install, which is exactly why we'll tell you honestly whether you need our crew or just the equipment.
Where a gantry is part of a larger project, a mezzanine, a workstation crane install, or a plant reconfiguration, it comes in on the same contract as everything else.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
If your question isn't here, call the shop. We'd rather talk it through than have you guess.
How much does a portable gantry crane cost?
Capacity, span, height, aluminum or steel, and whether it's adjustable. Aluminum costs more per ton than steel, and adjustability adds cost. We quote from your actual load and where it needs to reach.
Do I need a foundation or floor rails?
Most portable gantries roll on casters and need only a reasonably level, sound floor. Rail-mounted gantries need track, which is a different project.
Can one person move it?
Yes, lighter-capacity aluminum gantry cranes are typically designed for portability and easy relocation. Steel gantry cranes can also be moved, although their mobility depends on the crane's capacity, size, and weight, and whether they are equipped with casters or other provisions for relocation.
What's the capacity limit?
Gorbel steel gantry cranes, in fixed or adjustable height, are rated from 1 to 5 tons with spans from 8 to 30 ft. Aluminum gantry cranes run from 1,000 to 4,000 lbs with spans up to 20 ft. Above 5 tons, or where you need continuous coverage of an area, an overhead crane system is the better answer.
